English to Spanish Translation
Here are two excerpts of English-to-Spanish translations that I have done.
1. CESAR CHAVEZ COMMUNITY SCHOOL, ALBUQUERQUE, NM
- PROJECT: A bilingual high school student handbook
- DESCRIPTION: To better communicate with her increasing Spanish-speaking student and family population, the principal decided to have all of her high school’s official literature translated into Spanish. The following is an excerpt from the school’s Student Handbook, followed by my translation into Spanish.
- EXCERPT IN ORIGINAL ENGLISH:
- VIII. Student Dress Code
- Because CCCS values respect, safety, health and the educational process, the following are our guidelines for dress and appearance:
- –Clothing/jewelry that promotes alcohol, violence, lewdness, drugs and/or tobacco, or is determined by staff to reflect possible gang-related information is not acceptable.
- –Clothing/jewelry that disrespects a person or persons for any reason is not acceptable.
- –Clothing should be comfortable and appropriate* for the school or work activity.
- –Basically, anything that distracts from the learning process is not acceptable.
- *Appropriate is defined at staff discretion as:
- –Clean
- –Modest (ex. no halter tops (a strap over each shoulder is required) or other clothing that is revealing or does not cover private areas of the body appropriately for the school environment).
- –“Outerwear” covers “underwear” so underwear cannot be seen
- –School clothing: pajamas and house slippers are not considered school clothing
- –Safe for the school activity
- The Dress Code is a set of guidelines for helping young people understand the advantages gained by choosing certain types of dress in a specific environment to promote personal success. If a student wears something that requires this guidance, a teacher or staff member will discreetly inform the student, give the student a shirt to wear or ask the student to wear a jacket. The student may also call someone to bring appropriate clothing. Refusal to cooperate or repeated offenses may result in suspension from school.

- VIII. Código de vestimenta
- En CCCS valoramos el respeto, la seguridad, la salud y el proceso educacional, así que tenemos las siguientes guías para vestimenta y apariencia:
- –No es aceptable la ropa/joyas que promueven alcohol, violencia, lascividad, drogas, tobaco o que se determina por un personal reflejar información posible de las pandillas.
- –No es aceptable la ropa/joyas que muestran una falta de respeto a una persona o grupo de personas.
- –La ropa debe ser cómoda y apropiada* para las actividades de escuela o trabajo.
- –Basicamente, no es aceptable cualquier cosa que interrumpe el proceso de aprendizaje.
- *“Apropiado” se define por la discreción del personal de la escuela como:
- –Limpio
- –Modesto (ej. no se permiten camisetas de cuello halter—se necesitan un tirante sobre cada hombro—u otra ropa que muestra o que no cubre las partes privadas del cuerpo en una manera apropiada para el ambiente de la escuela)
- –Seguro para las actividades de la escuela
- –La ropa cubre la ropa interior para que no se vea

- El código de vestimenta es una guía para ayudar a jóvenes a entender las ventajas de escoger ciertos tipos de vestimenta para un ambiente específico que puede promover su éxito personal. 2. NEW MEXICO CENTENNIAL TASK FORCE, SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO
- PROJECT: A bilingual website
- DESCRIPTION: The state of New Mexico will be celebrating its centennial in 2012, and its task force has put together a website in order to share upcoming dates, encourage volunteerism, and generate state pride. For the New Mexico Centennial Task Force, I helped to translate much of their website into Spanish. Below is an excerpt from www.nmcentennial.org.

Remembering New Mexico history is like opening a gift: of rich diverse cultures, unique traditions, and the stories of generations. Commemorations give us the opportunity to honor the past, celebrate the present, and envision the future.
The New Mexico Centennial is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
It is an opportunity for New Mexicans to share their many gifts, showcase important treasures, and tell untold stories of depth and significance. It is a moment in time to recognize one another and take pride in our accomplishments. It is also a moment to remember the long journey our forebears followed to create this unique and beloved state, and imagine what New Mexico can be in the next one hundred years.

El plan maestro para el centenario
Recordar la historia de Nuevo México es como abrir un regalo: de culturas ricas y diversas, de tradiciones únicas, y de cuentos transmitidos a través de las generaciones. Las conmemoraciones nos dan la oportunidad para honrar el pasado, celebrar el presente y prever el futuro.
El centenario de Nuevo México es una oportunidad que se presenta sólo una vez en la vida.
Para nuevomexicanos, es la oportunidad para compartir sus varios regalos, mostrar sus tesoros importantes y decir aquellas historias sin contar de profundidad e importancia. Es un momento en el tiempo para reconocernos uno al otro y estar orgullosos de nuestras realizaciones. Además, es un momento para recordar el viaje largo que siguieron nuestros antepasados para crear este estado único y amado, e imaginar lo que Nuevo México puede ser en los próximos cien años.
